Common commands for CD and DVD backups
Backing up a DVD
I currently use dvdshrink to extract the data to an ISO file. I have not yet found the equivalent command line utilities for Linux, though it is an agenda item of mine to find out what it does.
After extracting the data to an ISO image, to write the pre-formated ISO data image:
growisofs -speed=2 -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=image.iso
I limit the speed in the above example as I had problems reading the DVD’s I wrote above this speed. I have yet to confirm, although I believe it is, whether or not the problem lies with the media.
